Youth therapy
Youth therapy refers to short therapy or psychotherapy provided by mental health professionals specializing in working with adolescents. All of our therapists working with young people are psychologists or psychotherapists, and appointments are available from Helsinki to Oulu, as well as online.
In therapy, you can chat in peace and confidence about your personal matters alone with the therapist. It’s your own time. Together, you can decide whether you want to attend sessions alone or if you’d like your parents to join, for example, at times. Sometimes parents can also benefit from one or a few support sessions where they can discuss thoughts related to parenting with the therapist. Youth therapy is just as confidential as therapy for adults – the therapist doesn’t disclose individual therapy discussions to the parent or adolescent.

When to consider youth therapy?
For young people, it’s especially important that they receive support from a mental health professional as early as possible.
Often, young individuals only seek therapy when they are experiencing significant distress or depression, and the situation has been ongoing for a long time. At that point, it’s crucial to seek counseling. However, it’s advisable to consider therapy even when something is bothering or troubling you, and the situation hasn’t become prolonged – a few counseling sessions can already be helpful and may suffice.
The duration of therapy for young people is typically around 5-20 sessions, depending on the situation. An expert can assess the situation and the extent of support needed during the initial appointment.

Many times, a young person enters therapy when they are already deeply anxious or depressed, and the situation has been ongoing for a long time. At that point, it becomes crucial to seek counseling support! Therapy can and should be sought even when something is bothering or worrying the individual, and the situation has not yet escalated – in those cases, just a few counseling sessions can help and may be sufficient.
You can come to therapy anytime you feel that external support in conversation could help you to unravel and organize your thoughts, feelings, or assist in resolving various challenges.
- Seeking therapy isn’t necessarily a sign that a young person is already facing mental health challenges or that things have reached a crisis point — therapy is actually a great resource for various stages of life! It’s a good idea to consider therapy when something is bothering you or causing concern, even if it hasn’t become too difficult yet. In those cases, just a few sessions can be really beneficial and might be all that’s needed. In such situations, short-term therapy is a fantastic support option. At Heltti, our short-term therapy services are provided by therapists with backgrounds in psychotherapy and/or psychology who specialize in working with young people.
- What if a young person already has mild or more challenging mental health issues? Often, a young person’s mood and situation have been challenging for a long time before they, their parents, friends, or other close ones realize the need for help and therapy. In those cases, it’s really important to get talking support!
The young person or their parent doesn’t need to know exactly what type of therapy is needed. The quickest way to proceed is to schedule the first appointment with a therapist as soon as possible and discuss the situation. It’s the therapist’s expertise to help find a suitable approach for the situation. The first session can involve only the young person or both the young person and the parent together. The first session can also be a support session for the parent, where the therapist can advise the parent on how to proceed in the situation.
The most important thing is that the young person gets help as soon as possible, and the situation doesn’t prolong!
The young person or their parent doesn’t need to know what type of therapy or how many therapy sessions are needed. Our skilled therapists assess the situation and help determine the need for therapy and its extent.
Often, the simplest way to proceed is to schedule an appointment for short-term therapy to assess the situation. Short-term therapy is effective and suitable for most situations. If the young person’s situation requires psychotherapy, short-term therapy is a pathway to explore the journey to psychotherapy and psychotherapy supported by Kela. You can get more information about all of these from the therapist.
The quickest way to proceed is to schedule an appointment with a therapist as soon as possible and discuss the situation – the therapist’s expertise is to help find the right next steps.
The first session can involve just the young person or both the young person and their parent. The initial session can also serve as a support session for the parent, where the therapist can provide guidance on how to proceed in the situation.
- Helps develop one’s own mental resources and problem-solving skills and to trust in them.

The well-being, endurance, and mental health of young people often concern parents and other loved ones. A young person entering therapy can be a relief for parents and other close individuals, even if the parent does not participate in the therapy sessions themselves.
Additionally, the support and guidance from the young person’s therapist often help improve the young person’s well-being. When the young person feels better and enhances their coping skills, it often reflects positively on the family’s daily life.
Young people’s therapy may involve joint therapy sessions for the young person and their parent/parents or siblings. These sessions aim to find ways to improve mutual interaction, thereby enhancing the overall family dynamics.
The priority is ensuring that the young person receives counseling and support. Often, it’s important for them to have confidential conversations with the therapist without their parents present.
Together, the young person, parent, and therapist can decide whether therapy sessions are moments for the young person to talk privately with the mental health professional or whether a parent or parents, or even siblings, should be present.
Young people’s therapy often involves a combination of one-on-one sessions with the therapist and separate joint sessions. Sometimes, a parent may also benefit from one or a few support sessions to discuss their thoughts about parenting with the therapist. Young people’s therapy is just as confidential as adult therapy – the therapist does not disclose one-on-one therapy discussions to parents or the young person.
Therapy for young people is equally confidential as it is for adults. Therapy sessions provide a safe and confidential space for young people to share their thoughts and feelings with a mental health professional without fear of disclosure to others. The therapist does not disclose discussions held with the young person to their parents or other close individuals.
However, if the young person is in a situation where they have suicidal thoughts or thoughts of harming others, the therapist has a legal obligation to contact appropriate support services and inform the parents.
If they start therapy early enough, typically around 7-10 sessions are needed. In such cases, we recommend short-term therapy conducted by a psychologist or psychotherapist. Short-term therapy is readily available, offered both in-person and online. See available times here!
If a young person is experiencing more severe symptoms, we recommend psychotherapy conducted by a psychotherapist, typically consisting of 10-20 sessions. Psychotherapy can also be accessed on a self-pay basis. See all the available times.
For the initial visit, we recommend starting with short therapy sessions. The therapist will advise if the situation warrants psychotherapy.
Longer, often supported by Kela, rehabilitation psychotherapy is considered when a young person over the age of 16 requires longer-term therapeutic support. If it appears that the young person’s situation requires longer-term therapy, you will receive information about it from the therapist.
Short therapy starts from 95 € / 45 min session. Short therapy is provided by mental health professionals with a background in psychology and/or psychotherapy who have received training in short-term therapeutic approaches.
The price for psychotherapy starts from 120 € / 45 min session. Psychotherapy can be sought entirely on a self-pay basis or one can apply for support from Kela when a young person over the age of 16 requires longer-term therapeutic support. Psychotherapy is provided by psychotherapists.
The price depends on the therapist’s educational background, further training, and level of experience.
