Welcome to Heltti’s therapy

You have booked an appointment with Heltti’s mental health services at our location in Vaasa. On this page, you will find the directions to the office and tips on how to prepare for your first visit if you wish.

What typically occurs during the first therapy session?

During the first therapy session, it’s all about getting to know each other and having a conversation. The therapist creates a safe environment where you can share about your background, reasons for seeking therapy, and the challenges or issues that led you to therapy. The therapist may also ask about your expectations and goals for therapy. Similarly, you can ask any questions you have in mind to the therapist.

The first meeting helps establish a mutual understanding of the issues you’ll be addressing and the kind of collaboration that will unfold between you. The goal is to build trust and openness so that therapy can progress effectively, and you can feel acknowledged and heard. The most important step has been taken, and now the therapist is there to support and assist you.

Here’s how you can prepare for your first visit if you wish:

People are different. Some prefer to prepare for the first meeting in advance, while others prefer to share their situation spontaneously. Either approach works for us.

If you still prefer to organize your thoughts before our first meeting, going through the following questions can be particularly helpful. Not all questions may be equally relevant to everyone, so feel free to focus on those that best suit your own situation.

If you wish, you can jot down your thoughts and bring your notes with you to the session.

  • What prompted you to reach out at this moment?
  • What do you hope to gain from a psychologist/therapist?
  • How have you been coping with your situation so far?
  • What has worked for you, and what hasn’t?
  • What would you like to be different in your life?
  • What are your greatest strengths or resources?
  • What are the potential obstacles you might face when seeking change in your current situation?
  • Have you sought counseling or therapy before? What did you gain from it?
